Liam was one of the first software developers to join ivoflow. He gained experience in software development in a working student job after completing his studies at the University of Koblenz. In June 2021, he joined ivoflow as a backend expert for the “Elixir” software language. Elixir is a rather rare language in the field of software development. Liam found it all the more appealing to be able to work with it.
How did ivoflow convince you?
I like being part of a rather small team. Larger companies or even corporations would not be for me. It's important to me that my job has a noticeable impact and that I can help shape something.
What are your tasks at ivoflow?
I am one of three backend developers in the team. We are responsible for continuously developing the backend of our software. This includes, for example, designing and developing new features, maintaining existing features and regularly checking the quality of our system using code analyses and tests. We also support the front-end developers and work alongside them.
Which project have you enjoyed the most so far?
Importing large data sets initially posed problems for our software. Depending on the volume, it took several days to load our customers' ERP data into the backend. Now our software can do it in just a few hours because we have increased performance enormously.
Which project was challenging and why?
We have developed individual KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for some of our customers. The challenge is to process large amounts of data in such a way that performance is not compromised. Some KPIs are becoming increasingly complex to handle as they need to be generic to fit into the predefined structure while remaining efficient when processing large amounts of data. This generic structure makes it easier to display in the front end, but poses a particular challenge for certain KPIs.
Is there an exciting project you're currently working on?
My answer here is also: KPI! Although they are always a challenge, it's exciting to see the finished data in the software.
What do you like best about your work?
First of all, of course the nice team! We have talented and experienced developers who not only have technical knowledge, but can also find creative solutions to complex problems. We communicate effectively with each other, share our knowledge and support each other. We work towards common goals and pull in the same direction. Second of all, our pizza day every tuesday. We order pizza together from the pizza van at the TZK and spend our lunch break together. It's been a little ritual for years.
