Book DemoThe Carbon Footprint of a Product
What is the carbon footprint of a product?
The carbon footprint of a product, also known as the “product carbon footprint”, comprises all greenhouse gas emissions, in particular carbon dioxide (CO2), caused by a product in the various phases of its life cycle. This includes the emissions generated during the manufacture of raw materials, production, transportation, use and disposal of a product. Key figures such as the product carbon footprint (PCF) are becoming increasingly important, particularly in view of the European Community's Sustainability Directive, which obliges companies to determine the emissions impact of their products.
How does the calculation of the product carbon footprint work?
If you want to calculate the product carbon footprint, you need to record and quantify all these greenhouse gas emissions. In view of mandatory sustainability reporting, companies already have to disclose the product carbon footprint of their products when submitting tenders.
Which software calculates the product carbon footprint?
There are numerous software solutions on the market that support companies in calculating their product carbon footprint. Some large industrial companies have already developed their own digital tools that calculate the PCF in order to secure a pioneering position and a competitive advantage. Apart from this, there are also start-ups that have seen a business model in calculating the product carbon footprint. The software tools generally offer comprehensive functions for carrying out life cycle analyses and calculating greenhouse gas emissions along the entire life cycle of a product. The calculation of the product carbon footprint is already integrated into ivoflow's procurement software: By connecting to Integrity Next, we offer our customers a comprehensive ESG dashboard that calculates and visualizes all relevant key figures, such as the product carbon footprint.
